Trenton Denholm will not be around all summer to see how far his streak can go, but as he departs for Team USA, the UC Irvine pitcher has already reached pretty remarkable levels.
With four scoreless innings in a win over Bourne on Monday, Denholm is now at 32.2 career Cape League innings without an earned run coming across.
Pitching out of the bullpen last summer, Denholm was spotless in 10 outings, with just an unearned run in a July 7 game against Brewster on his tally. He followed with a great sophomore season in which he had a 1.81 ERA with 93 strikeouts. He earned Big West Pitcher of the Year honors.
In two starts this year, he’s been nearly perfect, allowing just three hits total and no runs, earned or unearned. Tuesday, he went four innings with three strikeouts and no walks, surrendering just a single.
The performance helped Y-D pick up a shutout win, as reliever John Beller (USC) actually upstaged his teammate. Beller struck out eight of the 18 batters he faced in five one-hit innings to finish off the shutout.
Wareham 10, Hyannis 1
After getting shut-out twice on Sunday, Wareham broke out in a big way, blasting Hyannis and moving into a first-place tie in the West with Cotuit. Matt McClain (UCLA) had a home run and four RBI, while Jacob Teter (Florida Southern) went 4-for-5 with two RBI. Garrett Irvin (Arizona) earned the win in relief.
Chatham 4, Cotuit 2
Whoever came out of this matchup with a win was going to own the best record in the league, and it’s Chatham that now sits at 7-4-1. Jamal O’Guinn (USC) homered for the second straight day and now has three on the year. Kaden Polcovich (Northwest Florida) also went deep. Parker Scott (Oklahoma State) pitched well in relief, striking out four in 3.2 scoreless innings. Daniel Federman (Miami) notched the save.
What to Watch
It’ll be a busy day at Red Wilson Field, where Y-D hosts a pair of games against Harwich, beginning at 2 p.m.
