After a perfect-weather day of doubleheaders that included two sweeps and three splits, there are now four teams tied for the most points in the league – Cotuit in the West, and Brewster, Orleans and Chatham in the East.
The Kettleers got there in the most impressive fashion, sweeping past a Brewster team that had been alone with the best record in the league and taking over first place in the West.
Cotuit led most of the way in the opener, grabbing a 2-0 lead in the first and quickly breaking a 2-2 tie after Brewster had pulled even. National batting champ Nick Gonzales (New Mexico State) hit his second home run and drove in two, while Coltyn Kessler (Kentucky) also went deep. The NC State duo of Reid Johnston and Nick Swiney allowed one run each before Holden Powell (UCLA) finished the job with 2.2 scoreless innings.
The second game followed a similar path, with Cotuit again taking an early lead and later breaking a tie. Home runs provided a lot of the offense again, with Adam Oviedo (TCU) hitting his third of the summer and Casey Schmitt (San Diego State) blasting his second. Beck Way (Belmont Abbey) earned the win in relief and flamethrower Kyle Nicolas (Ball State) struck out four in three hitless innings for his third save.
Cotuit has hit the most home runs in the league with 14 across 11 games.
Orleans 1, Wareham 0; Orleans 1, Wareham 0
Orleans was also impressive, shutting down what had been the top hitting team in the league twice for a pair of 1-0 wins. Five pitchers teamed up in each game and all were obviously very good. Donovan Benoit (Santa Fe), Austin Love (North Carolina) and Nick Frasso (Loyola Marymount) all faced the minimum and didn’t allow a hit in their first-game stints. Wareham pitchers were just as good, which set up a dramatic finish. Raymond Gil (Miami) hit a walk-off solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to give Orleans the win. In game two, Wareham made a little more headway, outhitting Orleans 6-4, but a solo home run by Orleans’ Shay Whitcomb (UC San Diego) in the third provided the only offense. Dawson McCarville (Grand Canyon) earned the win in relief and Jeffrey Praml (Southern New Hampshire) picked up his third save.
Harwich 7, Hyannis 2; Hyannis 7, Harwich 2
Another twin bill with identical scores, but this one was a split as Hyannis took the second game to finally capture its first win of the season. The Harbor Hawks had dropped to 0-8-1 after the loss in the first game of the doubleheader. Harwich got home runs from Daniel Cabrera (LSU) – who finished 3-for-4 with four RBI – and Niko Kavadas (Notre Dame) in the opener. Logan Allen (Florida International) pitched well for the third time, striking out seven and allowing two unearned runs on three hits. As he heads to Team USA, he leaves with a 0.00 ERA. In the second game, Hyannis scored early and often to build a 7-1 lead after four innings. Nick Loftin (Baylor) went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Brooks Carlson (Samford) had two hits and an RBI. Pitching has been a real struggle for the Harbor Hawks so far but it wasn’t this time. Samuel Thoresen (Minnesota) struck out seven and allowed one run in five innings for the win. Nolan Crisp (Florida) surrendered one run in two innings to finish it off.
Falmouth 9, Y-D 6; Y-D 8, Falmouth 4
Falmouth smacked 12 hits in the opener and got strong relief work to stop a back-and-forth. Zach DeLoach (Texas A&M) went 4-for-4 with two RBI, Trei Cruz (Rice) homered and drove in three, and Blake Dunn (Western Michigan) went 2-for-2 with four RBI for the Commodores. It was a 7-6 Falmouth lead after five innings, but Aidan Maldonado (Illinois) and Zach Brzykcy (Virginia Tech) shut out Y-D over the final two frames. Andrew Eyster (South Carolina) homered for Y-D in the first game, which leads us into the second game, where Eyster also homered. He’s red-hot, with a .522 average, 3 home runs and nine RBI in nine games of action. The home run in the second game tied the score at 4-4 in the sixth inning and sparked a five-run rally that sent Y-D to the win. An RBI single by Riley King (Georgia) gave Y-D the lead. Chase Smith (Pittsburgh) pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief to seal the win.
Chatham 8, Bourne 2; Bourne 4, Chatham 2
For Bourne, just playing games was a victory. The Braves had been postponed three straight days and hadn’t played a game since Wednesday. Perhaps there was a little rust in the opener as Chatham won 8-2, but Bourne came back with a 4-2 win in the nightcap. A six-run second inning powered the Anglers in the first game. Brady Smith (Florida) had a two-run single before Spencer Torkelson (Arizona State) belted a grand slam. Jamal O’Guinn (USC) also went deep for Chatham. Luke Bartnicki (Georgia Tech) struck out seven in 3.1 innings for the win. In the second game, Ryan Cusick (Wake Forest) was dominant for Bourne, striking out eight in five scoreless innings. Tyler Brosius (Rhode Island) earned the save. Zavier Warren (Central Michigan) drove in two runs. For Chatham, Torkelson homered again. He now has two homers in four games this summer, giving him a Cape League career total of 12 in 35 career games. If he returns after a Team USA stint this year, as he did last year, it’s going to be fun to see what he ends up with as he approaches a full season’s worth of games.
What to Watch
Two of the 13-point teams meet in Chatham as Cotuit visits the Anglers.
